Three Ice Cream Flavors Vie for Minnesota State Fairgoer Votes in Kemps Hometown Favorites Contest

Kemps Selects Three Finalists in Honor of Third Annual Summertime Contest

ST. PAUL, MINN. — August 13, 2013 — The third annual Kemps Hometown Favorites contest will culminate at the Minnesota State Fair where fairgoers will help select the newest addition to the Kemps ice cream family. In honor of overwhelming excitement surrounding the contest in the first two years, Kemps added a third finalist to the slate this year. Narrowed down from the more than 260 entries, Funnel Cake A-Fair, Pistachio Fruit Party and MinnieAppleLicks will battle for sweet victory as the final three flavors in this summer-long contest. Inspired by their own family traditions, three locals dreamt up these flavors and Kemps turned them into a reality. Now, Kemps tasks fairgoers to help make the decision as to which flavor will be in freezer aisles across the state next summer.

“As a local company, dedicated to Minnesotans, we’re excited to be in our third year of the Hometown Favorites contest and wanted to do something special in its honor,” said Rachel Kyllo, vice president of marketing for Kemps. “With the enthusiasm surrounding the contest & quality of entries each consecutive year, we decided to select three finalists this year.”

Fairgoers can stop by the Kemps booth on Machinery Hill from 1 to 2 p.m. daily, taste the three final flavors and cast a vote for their favorite. On Wednesday, August 28, the grand prize winner will be chosen by a combination of fairgoer votes, online votes at and a celebrity judging panel at the fair. The judging panel will feature Kemps spokeswoman and Joe Mauer’s mom Teresa Mauer, the 2012 Hometown Favorites contest winner, Beth-Ann Bloom, and Princess Kay of the Milky Way.

More than 260 family tradition-inspired ice cream flavors were submitted to be the next Kemps Hometown Favorites flavor. A combination of nearly 3,000 votes cast online and the opinions of Kemps spokespeople Joe and Teresa Mauer helped to determine the top three finalists.
• Funnel Cake A-Fair, created by Amy Jordan of Mankato, Minn. – Vanilla ice cream with chunks of funnel cake, and powdered sugar and chocolate swirls, inspired by Amy’s favorite indulgence during her family’s amusement park trips.
• Pistachio Fruit Party, thought of by Mollie Laro of Wyoming, Minn. – Includes pistachio ice cream swirled with whipped cream ice cream, mini marshmallows and mixed fruit, inspired by the fruity salad Mollie brings to family get-togethers during the holidays.
• MinnieAppleLicks, dreamt up by Pete Wiechert of Mound, Minn. –  Vanilla ice cream with bits of apple, thick caramel swirls and peanuts, inspired by Pete’s family’s annual apple picking trips.
Additional information about the flavors will be available at the judging panel event. The winner will receive $2,500, a year supply of their ice cream and their flavor will appear on store shelves in 2014.
“I tried to envision the memories that the three family traditions represented and bring them to life in each flavor,” said Logan Julstrom, Kemps senior food technologist. “Each flavor was so unique that it was a fun challenge to make the ingredients stand out.”

Last year at the Minnesota State Fair, fairgoers sampled and helped select the second winner of the Kemps Hometown Favorites contest. The winning flavor, dreamt up by Woodbury, Minn., native Beth-Ann Bloom, was Mini-Sota Donut and contains cinnamon and nutmeg chips with chunks of mini donuts. Mini-Sota Donut is now available at major grocery stores and super retailers throughout Minnesota for a suggested retail price of $5.99.

The Kemps booth will feature several family-friendly activities, including  sampling IttiBitz ice cream twice daily at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and Kemps will give away 1,000 free ice cream cone scoops each day. Guests can walk through the Kemps refrigerated trailer to cool off and learn about why the Kemps cows love living in Minnesota. In addition to learning about Dairy Farmers of America families, visitors can get the famous cow temporary tattoos and enter to win daily giveaways.

Outside of the Kemps booth, kids can participate in the Kemps-sponsored Little Farm Hands Exhibit and help them celebrate their 10th birthday.
